GSM is the closest thing detailing has to a published specification, and this is the one category where most makers actually print it. Higher is not simply better.

The one category where the number exists
Across this entire site, published specifications are scarce. Towels are the exception: The Rag Company publishes GSM for its Eagle line and its Rip N’ Rag, Autofiber publishes GSM in the product title, and Adam’s publishes 480 GSM and says openly that it is lower than their other towels.

Higher GSM is not simply better
A 900gsm towel holds a great deal of liquid and has a deep pile. That is exactly right for drying and exactly wrong for removing a coating, where the deep pile grabs residue and drags it across the panel you are trying to level.
A 280gsm pearl-weave towel holds almost nothing and glides. That is exactly right for coating removal and useless for drying. Buying by GSM alone, without knowing the job, is how people end up with six towels that all do the same thing.
The weights, and what each is for
- 250-350gsm: coating and sealant removal, glass, general wiping. Light, controlled, cheap enough to own many.
- 480-600gsm: the general-purpose range. Polish removal, quick detailing, final buffing.
- 900gsm and above: glass with a specialist weave, or drying with a twist-loop weave.
- 1,100gsm: drying only. See the drying towel roundup, which treats that category separately.
The edge is what scratches
A stitched or overlocked border is stiffer than the pile and is the part of a towel most likely to mark paint. The Eagle line is edgeless and tag-free; the Adam’s polishing towel uses a silk-printed border rather than a stitched tag.
Check the edge before the density. An edgeless 350gsm towel is safer on paint than a 600gsm one with a hard stitched border, and the edge is published far less often than the number.
How many towels do you need
More than you think. A single wash uses two or three drying towels, a rinseless wash uses eight to twelve, and a correction uses a fresh towel per panel to avoid dragging compound residue back. Twelve to twenty general-purpose towels is a realistic working stock.
At $4.80 each for the Eagle 500, that is around $80 to $100 — a real number, and one that spreads over years if they are washed properly. Tool maintenance covers laundering, and fabric softener is the thing that ends a towel’s life prematurely.
