Ammonia is the whole question
Aftermarket window film is a laminate held on with an adhesive layer, and ammonia degrades that adhesive. The visible results are the purple discoloration and the bubbling you see on older tinted cars, and once it starts the film has to be removed and replaced.
Most household glass cleaners contain ammonia. Most automotive glass cleaners do not, and almost none of them says so plainly. Half of glass cleaning is the towel
Streaks are usually a towel problem rather than a chemical problem. A plush towel with a long pile holds product and smears it; a low-pile or waffle-weave glass towel removes it cleanly. Autofiber publishes 900gsm and 16 by 16 inches for its glass towel, and a no-pile towel at 260gsm for tint and PPF work.
The two-towel method is what actually eliminates streaks: one damp towel to clean, one dry towel to buff immediately behind it. Doing it with one towel is why people conclude their glass cleaner is bad.
The inside is the hard part
The film on the inside of a windshield is off-gassing from interior plastics plus whatever overspray your other products have contributed. It is oily rather than dirty, which is why it smears rather than wiping away, and it needs a proper glass cleaner rather than a wipe with a damp towel.
- Do glass last, after every other interior product. Overspray from dashboard products is most of what is on the inside of the screen.
- Spray the towel, never the glass. Spraying glass in a car puts product on the dashboard and the A-pillars.
- Reach the bottom edge of the windshield. It is the part nobody cleans and the part that catches low sun.
- Use a separate towel for glass, kept away from every other job. A towel that has touched a dressing will smear forever.
- Wipe the inside horizontally and the outside vertically, so you can tell which side a remaining streak is on.
