Drying is where the damage happens
Every other step in a wash has water and lubricant between the towel and the paint. Drying does not: it is dry cloth on clear coat, with whatever the rinse failed to remove still sitting there. That is why a drying towel is worth more attention than the soap, and why the technique matters as much as the towel.
The safest method is blotting rather than dragging. Lay the towel on a panel, pat, lift, move. It takes slightly longer than wiping and it removes the lateral movement that turns a trapped particle into a scratch. A big towel makes blotting practical, which is the real argument for size.

One published GSM figure out of five, in the one category where GSM is genuinely the decisive number. That is the state of the market, and it is why the towel that publishes its density leads the page. The Gauntlet is arguably a more interesting product — the alternating twist-loop and plush weave is a real design idea — and The Rag Company does not say how dense it is.
Weave matters as much as density
Twist loop
Long twisted loops that hold an enormous amount of water. Best raw absorbency, heaviest when saturated, and the standard for a single-towel whole-car dry.
Waffle
A flat grid weave that holds less total water and releases it more readily. The right choice if you drag rather than blot, and the right choice on a coated car where the water mostly sheets off and you are collecting the remainder.
Hybrid
The Gauntlet alternates twist loop and plush stripes so the loops move water and the plush finishes behind. It is the only genuinely novel construction in this group.
Use a drying aid
A light mist of quick detailer on a wet panel before the towel touches it does two things: it adds lubricity so the towel glides, and it leaves a thin layer of protection behind. Adam’s explicitly lists drying aid as a use for its Detail Spray, and CarPro states Reload 2.0 can be applied wet.
On a coated car this is the whole drying routine: the coating sheets most of the water off, a drying aid handles the rest, and the towel barely works at all. That is what people mean when they say a coating makes washing faster.
