Microfiber GSM, Explained
GSM is the only widely published specification in detailing, which makes it the most misused. Higher is not better; it is different, and the weave matters just as much.

What the number means
Grams per square meter is the mass of a square meter of the fabric, which in practice describes how much fiber is packed into the towel. A higher figure means more pile, which means more absorbency, more bulk and more surface area in contact with the paint.
It is the only specification most towel makers publish, which is why it is on every product page and why people treat it as a quality score. It is not one. It is a description of what the towel is for.

What GSM does not tell you
Weave
A waffle-weave towel at 400gsm and a twist-loop towel at 400gsm behave completely differently: the waffle releases water readily and the twist loop holds it. A pearl weave at 280gsm glides over a fresh coating; a plush towel at the same density would grab it. Weave is published far less often than density and matters at least as much.
Blend
Microfiber is a blend of polyester and polyamide, usually expressed as 70/30 or 80/20. The polyamide fraction is the absorbent, softer component. Several makers state the ratio and almost none states it by weight, so it is a rough signal rather than a specification.
Edge
A stitched or overlocked border is stiffer than the pile and is the part of a towel most likely to mark paint. An edgeless 350gsm towel is safer than a 600gsm one with a hard stitched edge, and the edge is not in the GSM figure at all.
Building a towel set by job
- Coating and sealant removal: 250-350gsm, low pile, edgeless. Buy plenty; they are used once per panel.
- General purpose and polish removal: around 500gsm. This is the bulk of a working stock.
- Glass: a dedicated low-pile or specialist glass towel, kept away from every other job.
- Drying: one or two genuinely large twist-loop or waffle towels, 900gsm and up.
- Wheels and engine bay: whatever is oldest, permanently color-coded, and never returned to paint.

GSM does not survive bad laundering
Fabric softener coats microfiber and destroys its absorbency permanently, which turns a 1,100gsm drying towel into an expensive rag in one wash. Dryer sheets do the same thing. Cotton lint in a mixed load embeds in the pile and stays there.
A well-cared-for towel lasts years and a badly washed one lasts a month, which makes laundering a bigger variable than the number on the label — tool maintenance covers it properly.
