How to Apply a Ceramic Coating
The coating is the easy part. Nearly everything that decides how it turns out happens before the bottle opens, and the rest is leveling it inside the maker's window and keeping it dry.

Before the bottle opens
Every coating maker assumes the paint underneath is clean, bare and free of the defects you do not want to keep, because a coating bonds to what it touches and preserves what it covers. That means a wash, chemical decontamination and clay, then polishing if there are swirls you do not want sealed in.
Then the panel wipe. Polishing leaves oils on the paint, and a coating applied over them bonds to the oil rather than the clear coat. Skipping the wipe is the most common reason a coating fails early.

The sequence
- 1Wash and decontaminate. Iron remover, then clay, so the coating goes onto bare paint.
- 2Correct if you need to. A coating locks in swirls; a one-step polish is enough for most cars.
- 3Panel-wipe every panel. Remove the polishing oils before anything else touches the paint.
- 4Check temperature and light. Shade, and inside the window: CarPro publish 40F to 90F.
- 5Load the applicator. A suede cloth wrapped on a foam block and a few drops of coating. CarPro’s block has a slit in each face to hold the suede.
- 6Apply one small section. Overlapping passes in two directions, one panel or less at a time. CarPro publish 10ml per coat, so a 30ml bottle is about three coats.
- 7Level inside the window. CarPro publish 2 to 5 minutes. Wipe with a low-pile towel, then a second clean one.
- 8Inspect before moving on. Under an inspection light, from more than one angle.
- 9Keep it dry. Gyeon publish 12 hours out of direct sun; Adam’s publish 24 hours free from water and weather.
High spots, and how to catch them
A high spot is coating left too thick, and it shows as a dark smear or a rainbow patch once it cures. Caught inside the leveling window, a clean towel removes it; missed, it usually has to be polished off. That is why the light matters: an inspection light held at an angle shows residue that overhead light hides.
A lighter towel helps too. A 350 GSM towel such as The Rag Company’s Eagle Edgeless is less inclined to drag residue around than a heavy plush one, and it has no edge tape to catch.
One coat or two
