One product, one pass, most of the defects gone. The makers disagree about whether a one-step should also protect, and that choice matters more than the brand if a coating comes next.

What a one-step is, and when it is enough
A one-step polish cuts and finishes in a single pass, trading the last few percent of correction for half the time. For a car with light swirls and wash marring that is usually the right trade; for deep scratches in hard clear coat it is not. One-step versus two-step covers the test that tells you which you need.

Two publish a cut you can compare
Adam’s say their One Step removes 2000-grit sanding scratches, and Koch-Chemie say P6.02 removes P2000 sanding marks, which puts both at the same published ceiling. Koch go further and rate P6.02 at 6.0 for cut and 8.0 for gloss on their own scale. That scale only compares Koch products with each other, but it is a number.
The other four describe cut in words: small defects for RUPES, light imperfections for Chemical Guys, medium cut for PRIMO, and “cuts like a compound” for 3D ONE.
Protection: one figure, and one catch
RUPES are the only maker here to put a number on protection: up to 90 days, from a blend of polymer, silicone and carnauba. Adam’s, Chemical Guys and PRIMO claim protection without a figure, and Koch name carnauba wax and non-volatile silicones in the sealant layer P6.02 leaves behind.
The catch is what comes next. If a ceramic coating follows the polish, the oils and silicones a polish leaves sit between the paint and the coating, and the panel wipe has to remove them. 3D ONE claims no protection at all, which makes it the cleanest base here for a coating.
The machine and the method
Koch-Chemie specify a dual action polisher with at least a 15mm throw, or a forced-rotation machine, and five pea-sized drops on a One Cut pad. Adam’s publish the fullest method: four drops on a white foam pad at speed 3 to 4 for light correction, an orange or blue pad at 4 to 5 for more, and a warning that their One Step Pad can micro-mar soft clear coats. 3D say ONE works on a rotary for aggressive cutting or on a dual action with a softer pad for finishing.
