The Best Detailing Inspection Light in 2026
You cannot correct what you cannot see, and overhead garage light hides most of it. The useful numbers are color temperature and runtime, not just lumens.

Why a light is part of paint correction
Swirls and haze show up when a small, bright source reflects off the paint at an angle, and they disappear under broad overhead light. That is why a panel can look finished in the garage and swirled in the sun. An inspection light is how you find the defects before you polish and confirm they are gone afterwards.

Color temperature matters as much as brightness
RUPES built the LL200 around a single 4,000K temperature chosen to replicate sunlight, and say it reveals sanding marks, pigtails and swirls across more colors and paint types. Adam’s and Scangrip go the other way and let you switch: three temperatures on the Adam’s pocket light, five on the I-Match 3 and the Multimatch 8, and a 2,500 to 6,500K range on the Multimatch R. Switching lets you match the light to the paint in front of you.
Enough output, not the most
The hand-held lights here publish 100 to 500 lumens, which is plenty for one panel at close range. The Multimatch R publishes up to 1,200 and the Multimatch 8 up to 8,000; those are lights for a stand, lighting a whole side of the car. Past a point, more output in the hand mostly adds glare.
Hands-free is a specification
Polishing takes two hands, and a light you have to hold is a light you put down. The I-Match 3 is the only headlamp here: 25 to 250 lumens, five color temperatures and 1.5 to 15 hours of runtime. The Matchpen R clips into a pocket and focuses from 10 to 45 degrees; the Adam’s pocket light has a folding magnetic base and the Swirl Finder a rotating magnetic clip.

Every pick, with the working
Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are figures the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis.
