What panel prep is for
3D’s listing gives the clearest explanation. After compounding and polishing, a panel wipe chemically strips the polishing oils off each panel so the coating can bond. The catch, 3D argue, is that most solvents are poor lubricants, so the wipe itself can put light towel marring back into paint you have just perfected. Adam’s tell a similar story about their own product: they raised Surface Prep to 30% IPA and added lubricants because their old 12% Coating Prep grabbed.

Alcohol, solvent or water
There are three approaches here. Adam’s and Koch-Chemie use alcohol, and only Adam’s say how much. Gtechniq blend high-purity alcohols with aromatic solvents and say the mix gives just enough working time before it flashes. 3D go the other way, with a water base and surfactants, sold on lubrication. Mothers call CMX pH neutral and silicone-free, safe in body shops. Obsessed Garage say they prefer CarPro Eraser because it is less grabby than plain isopropyl alcohol.
Use it between polishing steps too
Two of these are sold for inspection as well as prep. Obsessed Garage use Eraser after compounding to see the true result before finishing, and Koch-Chemie say PPS lets you check the paint for holograms and surface scratches. Cover every inch
Adam’s directions are to spray into a clean microfiber towel or onto the surface and wipe the whole panel, because every area you miss risks the coating not adhering there. The coating towel roundup covers what to wipe with.
