Pad color is not a standard
Blue is a cutting pad at Lake Country and a cutting pad at RUPES and something else somewhere else. Orange is polishing at Lake Country and medium cutting at Chemical Guys. There is no cross-brand convention, and buying by color is how people end up finishing with a cutting pad.
What you want instead is the maker’s own stated position within its own range. RUPES does this best: the Aqua pad is described explicitly as sitting between the Fine yellow and the Coarse blue. That is a sentence you can act on.

Thin foam is a real design idea
Lake Country’s HDO line is built on a specific argument: thinner foam moves less under the pad, movement generates heat, and heat is what causes hazing and micro-marring. They publish a 1 inch thickness and a claim of 10% cooler running than traditional foam.
The 10% figure has no published test method behind it, which is worth stating. The mechanism is sound and widely accepted, and the number is a claim. What is not a claim is the 70-degree beveled edge, which is a measurable geometry that stops the pad rolling over on a curved panel — the failure that causes edge strikes.
Foam, microfiber or wool
Foam
The default. Predictable, easy to clean, available in every cut level, and it generates more heat than the alternatives. Suits most jobs on most paint.
Microfiber
More cut for the same machine and less heat than foam of equivalent aggressiveness. RUPES publishes the construction — a microfiber face bonded to semi-flexible foam — which is what lets a cutting medium still follow a curve. The trade is that microfiber pads shed and need cleaning far more often.
Wool
The most aggressive option and the least forgiving. Genuine correction speed on hard clear coats, and a finish that almost always needs a foam stage afterwards.
How many, and which sizes
Three to four pads minimum for a car: at least two of whatever you are cutting with, because one will load up halfway through and a fresh pad is faster than cleaning mid-job. Match the size to your backing plate — a 5 inch pad on a 6 inch plate is a way to damage both.
A 3 inch set for a mini polisher is the other purchase worth making. Pillars, mirrors and bumper corners need a small pad, and the polisher roundup covers the machines they fit.
