Polishing and Paint Correction
Microfiber vs Foam Polishing Pads
The pad does as much of the cutting as the compound, and the choice between microfiber and foam is really a choice between speed and forgiveness.

Cut comes from the pad as much as the liquid
The same compound on a microfiber pad removes more clear coat than it does on a foam finishing pad. That is why swapping pads is usually a cheaper first move than buying a more aggressive compound, and why the pairing guide treats the two as one decision.
What microfiber gives you
Speed. Adam’s say it directly - microfiber cuts faster than foam - and they are selling both, so it is not a claim against a rival. They also publish that their newer pad uses a thinner, high-density foam backing so the compound finishes down better, which is an admission of the usual trade: faster microfiber cutting tends to leave more haze behind.
What foam gives you
Forgiveness and a cleaner finish. Foam cuts more slowly, so a mistake takes longer to become a problem, and it finishes down more cleanly. Lake Country publish the one performance claim on this page - their HDO foam runs 10% cooler than traditional foam - and heat is the thing that shortens pad life and makes a pad behave inconsistently.
Which to buy first
- First correction, or soft paint: foam. RUPES DA Aqua at $9.99 sits mid-range.
- Foam is not removing the defect: a microfiber pad before a heavier compound.
- You own an Adam's machine: their Blue Microfiber pad, sized to your orbit throw by their own chart.
- Whatever you buy, buy at least two of each and swap them before they clog.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are figures the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis.
Our pickReal cut on a DA without moving to a rotary
Adam's Blue Microfiber Cutting Pad
Adam's Polishes
$14.99 for a 5.5 inch pad, with premium cutting microfiber on a thinner, high-density foam backing than Adam's earlier orange pad. Adam's state that microfiber cuts faster than foam and publish which pad size matches which of their machines by orbit throw.
- Sizes
- 2 in (3-pack), 3.5 in (2-pack), 5.5 in, 6.5 in
- Media
- Premium cutting microfiber on high-density thin foam
- Tool compatibility
- Dual action, random orbital, rotary
- Size to machine
- 3.5 in for 12mm, 5.5 in for 15mm, 6.5 in for 21mm throw
- Thickness
- Not published
- Stated pad life
- Not published
What it does well
- Pad size published against machine throw: 3.5 in for 12mm, 5.5 in for 15mm, 6.5 in for 21mm
- Rated for dual action, random orbital and rotary
- Thinner, high-density foam backing than the previous version, stated
- Four sizes from $14.99 to $16.99
Who it is not for
- "Cuts faster than foam" is the maker's claim, with no data behind it
- Color-matched to Adam's own compound, so the pairing advice assumes their system
- No thickness and no pad life published
How this score was calculated
- Protection claimdropped
- Nothing in this category is bought on how long it lasts, so the axis is dropped and the other weights are re-normalized.
- Capabilitydropped
- No single published number decides capability in this category, so the axis is dropped rather than invented.
- Cost per ouncedropped
- This is not a consumable, so cost per ounce says nothing useful and the axis is dropped.
- Price against the ceiling7.0/10, weight 14%
- A listed $14.99 against the $50 one upgrade in this category realistically tops out at. A list price captured on the compile date, not a live price and not what you will pay.
- Written commitmentdropped
- Adam's Polishes publishes no warranty term on this product's own page, so the axis is dropped. On a tool that is worth noticing, and it costs the product points on transparency instead.
- Spec transparency6.7/10, weight 18%
- 4 of the 6 specifications we went looking for are published by Adam's Polishes. Every blank row below is something the maker will not put in writing, and it costs the product points here.

2Cut without the heat of a foam pad
RUPES DA Microfiber and Wool Pads
RUPES
From $12.59 to $21.59 across 3, 5 and 6 inch in microfiber coarse, microfiber fine, coarse wool and coarse-medium wool. The microfiber face is bonded to semi-flexible foam, which is what lets a cutting medium still follow a curve.
- Sizes
- 80mm (3 in) / 130mm (5 in) / 160mm (6 in)
- Media
- Microfiber coarse, microfiber fine, coarse wool, coarse-medium wool
- Construction
- Microfiber face bonded to semi-flexible foam
- Thickness
- Not published
- Density
- Not published
- Stated pad life
- Not published
What it does well
- Four media and three sizes published, with prices for each combination
- Microfiber bonded to semi-flexible foam, published, which is the construction detail that matters
- Wool options for defects foam will not touch
Who it is not for
- Microfiber pads shed and need cleaning far more often than foam
- No thickness or density figures published
- The four-way choice is confusing without a machine you already know

3Thin foam, cooler running, color-coded cut
Lake Country HDO Foam Pads
Lake Country
Three sizes, 1 inch thick, in blue cutting, orange polishing and black finishing, with a 70-degree beveled edge and a stated 10% cooler running temperature. The thin foam is the design: less foam movement is less heat, and heat is what causes hazing.
- Sizes
- 3.5 in / 5.5 in / 6.5 in
- Thickness
- 1 inch
- Cut levels
- Blue cutting, orange polishing, black finishing
- Edge
- 70 degree beveled
- Heat claim
- 10% cooler than traditional foam
- Density figure
- Not published
- List price
- Not published
What it does well
- Cut level published by color rather than left to the product name
- 70-degree beveled edge published, which is what stops the pad rolling on an edge
- Stated to run 10% cooler than traditional foam
- Three sizes, 3.5, 5.5 and 6.5 inch
Who it is not for
- No pore structure or density figure published
- The temperature claim has no stated test method behind it
- Thin foam conforms less on a heavily curved panel
How this score was calculated
- Protection claimdropped

4The pad to own if you are only owning one
RUPES D-A Intermediate Aqua Foam Pad
RUPES
$7.99 in 3 inch up to $10.99 in 6 inch, and RUPES positions it explicitly between the fine yellow and the coarse blue. Being told where a pad sits in its own maker's range is more useful than any adjective about cut.
- Sizes
- 3 in / 5 in / 6 in
- Position in range
- Between D-A Fine (yellow) and D-A Coarse (blue)
- Tool compatibility
- Random orbital and gear-driven
- Thickness
- Not published
- Density
- Not published
- Stated pad life
- Not published
What it does well
- Position in the range published: between D-A Fine yellow and D-A Coarse blue
- Stated for both random orbital and gear-driven tools
- Three sizes from 3 to 6 inch, all under $11
Who it is not for
- No thickness or density published
- Locked into RUPES' own color system, which does not map onto anyone else's
- No stated pad life

5The one-pad answer for light to moderate defects
Chemical Guys Orange Hex-Logic Quantum Cutting Pad
Chemical Guys
$12.49 for 5 inch or $14.49 for 6 inch, described as a medium-cutting pad for swirls, light scratches, oxidation and water spots. If you are buying one pad to go with a one-step polish, this is the cut level that matches.
- Sizes
- 5 inch / 6 inch
- Cut level
- Medium cutting
- Stated defects
- Swirls, scratches, oxidation, water spots
- Thickness
- Not published
- Density
- Not published
- Stated pad life
- Not published
What it does well
- Defect list published explicitly rather than left as 'medium cut'
- 5 and 6 inch sizes at a $2 difference
- The Hex-Logic face is stocked everywhere, so replacements are never a special order
Who it is not for
- No density, pore count or thickness figure published
- No stated pad life
- Buying pads by brand color is a habit worth breaking; colors are not standard across makers
