The Best Backing Plate for a DA Polisher in 2026

The backing plate sits between the machine and the pad, and it wears out. Thread and diameter decide whether a plate fits; flexibility decides how it handles curves.

We have not tested any of this. Everything below is compiled from published manufacturer specifications, and the arithmetic is printed so you can check it. Buy the Griot’s Garage DA Backing Plate at $19.99 for 5 inch. It publishes its thread, 5/16 inch, and names the machines it fits across three brands, including Meguiar’s G110 and the Porter Cable 7424XP. On a RUPES machine, stay with RUPES’ own plate or one made for RUPES.

A dual action polisher's backing plate beside a foam pad

Thread comes first

A backing plate screws onto the polisher’s spindle, and the thread has to match. Griot’s and Adam’s both publish 5/16 inch, and Griot’s name the machines that take it: Meguiar’s G110 and G110V2, their own polishers and the Porter Cable 7424XP. RUPES publish an M8-F pad thread for the LHR15 Mark III, so a 5/16 inch plate is the wrong thread for that machine.

Match the plate to the pad

Adam’s publish the pairing for their Swirl Killer plates: a 3 inch plate for 3.5 inch pads, 5 inch for 5.5 inch and 6 inch for 6.5 inch. Their Porter Cable plate names 5.5 inch microfiber or 6 inch foam pads. The pattern is the same everywhere: the pad is a little larger than the plate, so the plate’s edge never touches the paint. The polishing pad roundup covers the pads.

Flexibility is for curves

Four makers describe a flexible plate: Griot’s flexible molded edge, Chemical Guys’ Hyper Flex, Adam’s flexible foam and the Smoothie, which Shine Supply say is less rigid than the RUPES stock plate. A plate that gives at the edge keeps the pad flat on a curved panel instead of riding on its rim.

RUPES owners have two choices

RUPES sell the Direct Flow plate as their factory replacement at $44.99 for 5 inch. The Smoothie, made with Shine Supply, is the alternative: a slight gap to the housing that Shine Supply say reduces stalling, a greaseless mount, and a warning that it does not fit the RUPES Mark V machines. It is sold only at Shine Supply.

What to buy

  • Any 5/16 inch DA, with the fit named: Griot's DA Backing Plate, $19.99 for 5 inch.
  • A Porter Cable 7424XP: Adam's 5 in Porter Cable Plate, $18.99, spacer included.
  • Three sizes from one maker: Chemical Guys TORQ R5, from $15.99.
  • An Adam's Swirl Killer: Adam's replacement plate, $14.99, sized to the throw.
  • A RUPES machine: RUPES Direct Flow, or the Smoothie if you buy from Shine Supply.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are figures the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis.

Questions people actually ask

+Are polisher backing plates universal?
No. The thread and diameter have to match. Griot’s and Adam’s publish 5/16 inch; RUPES publish M8-F for the LHR15 Mark III.
+What size backing plate do I need for 5.5 inch pads?
Adam’s pair a 5 inch plate with 5.5 inch pads.
+When should I replace a backing plate?
When the hook-and-loop wears and pads stop holding, which Adam’s describe as normal wear and tear.
