Metal polish is for bare metal
Adam’s make the point plainly: many factory wheel finishes are called polished but are in fact clear-coated. Rub a little metal polish on a hidden spot. Black residue on the applicator means raw metal and the polish is working; no residue means clear coat, and a paint polish is the right product instead. The finishing polish roundup covers those.

One step, or two for a show finish
Adam’s sell both routes. The One Step combines cut and finish and adds sealers so the metal does not re-oxidize straight away. Metal Polish #1 and #2, $12.99 each, split it into a restoring step and a finishing step, which Adam’s pitch at show cars. For most wheels and trim, one step is the sensible start.
Exhaust tips have their own problem
Heat discolors stainless and chrome tips, and carbon bakes on. Mothers make a product for exactly that: micro-polishing agents and cleaning emollients for carbon, soot, bluing and heat discoloration, stated safe on stainless, chrome and black chrome tips, leaving a barrier against tarnish.
Cost per ounce
Turtle Wax’s chrome polish is 50 cents an ounce, Chemical Guys $1.25, Mothers Mag & Aluminum $1.45 in the 10 oz tin, Adam’s One Step $2.50 and #1 $3.25, and Gtechniq M1 about $5.90. Metal trim takes very little product, so the tin size matters more than the ounce price.
