The barrel is the whole problem
The face of a wheel gets washed every time the car does. The barrel — the inside of the rim, behind the spokes and around the caliper — does not, and it is where brake dust actually accumulates. Every design decision in this category is an attempt to reach it.
That is why the shapes vary so much: angled heads to get past spokes, flexible bodies to follow a curved barrel, long thin brushes to go all the way through. There is no single right answer, because a wheel with five open spokes and one with twenty tight ones are different problems.

The part that scratches wheels is not the bristles
Brushes rarely damage a wheel with their bristles. They damage it with the hard part underneath — the molded head, the ferrule, the metal shaft at the tip of a barrel brush — when the bristles compress under pressure and the hard part reaches the surface.
Three makers here address that directly. Adam’s rubberized their head and published the reason. Mothers fit a protective rubber bumper. EZ Detail fit a rubber tip protector and their retailer warns you to keep an eye on it. It is the single most important design feature in the category and half the market does not mention it.
One design admits the face wears out
Every brush on this page degrades. Flagged bristles wear rounded and stop cleaning; a microfiber head packs with brake dust and stiffens. Only Detail Factory publish a design that accounts for it: two interchangeable microfiber covers, with replacements sold separately at $9.95.
That means the $32.95 handle outlives its face, and the ongoing cost is $9.95 rather than another whole brush. Over three years it is the cheapest option here, which is not obvious from the sticker price.
Microfiber heads versus bristles
Microfiber heads conform to the barrel shape and are gentler on painted and polished finishes. They also hold brake dust stubbornly and need washing after every use, or you are scrubbing next week’s wheel with last week’s grit.
Bristles rinse clean far more easily and reach into tighter gaps. Flagged bristles — split at the ends, as Adam’s publish — are the compromise: more cleaning surface per bristle, softer contact per point. Neither approach is wrong; the maintenance burden differs and tool maintenance covers keeping either usable.
