Why a wheel coating is not a paint coating
A wheel lives in a different environment from every other painted surface on the car. It gets showered continuously with hot ferrous particles from the brake pads, it sees temperatures a paint coating is never rated for, and it is cleaned with chemistry aggressive enough that no sane person would put it on a hood. A coating that survives that is doing a genuinely different job.
The specification that captures it is temperature resistance, and exactly one product in this category publishes one: Gyeon states greater than 800C for Q² Rim EVO. Whether your brakes reach anything like that is beside the point — what matters is that one maker is prepared to put a thermal figure in writing and the rest are not.
The benefit is cleaning time, not appearance
Nobody notices a coated wheel. What they notice is that brake dust rinses off rather than needing agitation, which turns wheel cleaning from the longest part of a wash into the shortest. Gyeon states this directly — reduces brake dust buildup and makes wheels easier to clean — and it is the honest sales pitch for the whole category.

Wheels off, or do not bother
The face of a wheel is the part you can see and the part that stays cleanest. The barrel is where the brake dust actually accumulates, and coating the face while leaving the barrel bare means the job you were trying to make easier is unchanged. Gyeon publishes a consumption figure of 15 to 20ml per set, which is a figure that assumes you are getting to the barrels.
- Remove the wheels, or accept that you are coating a third of the surface that matters.
- Decontaminate first with an iron remover, then clay the face. Coating over embedded brake dust seals it in.
- Panel-wipe before coating, exactly as you would on paint. Wheel cleaner residue prevents bonding.
- Do the calipers and the inner barrels while the wheels are off. You will not have the access again for a year.
When a wheel coating is the wrong purchase
If your wheels are painted, in good condition, and you already coat the car, a spray coating on the faces every few months costs a fifth as much and gets most of the cleaning benefit. If the wheels are curbed, refinish them before coating anything — a coating over damaged clear coat seals the damage in for eighteen months.
And if the wheels are polished or bare metal, read the finish compatibility line on every product page carefully.
