What a drying aid actually is
It is a lubricant. You mist it onto a wet panel before the towel touches it, and the towel glides rather than grabbing. Most of them also leave a thin layer of protection behind, which is a bonus rather than the purpose.
The reason it belongs in every wash routine is arithmetic rather than chemistry. Drying is the second-largest source of wash-induced marring after the wash mitt, it happens on every single wash, and a $25 bottle covers dozens of them. Compared to the cost of correcting a hood, it is not close.
Two makers publish a mechanism, and they are different ones
Blending Company describe Wet Detailer as a water-activated paint sealant. That single phrase explains why the product belongs at the drying step rather than being a quick detailer used opportunistically on a wet car: the water on the panel is part of the chemistry, not an obstacle to it.
Chemical Guys take a different route with HydroDry and publish the physics instead: SiO2 polymers that turn rinse water into sheets which leave the panel rather than beads which sit on it. Sheeting is the correct behavior at this step — a beading surface holds tight droplets that evaporate in place and spot.
Obsessed Garage describe the function honestly — lubrication and protection at the drying step — without naming what is in the bottle. Mothers publish the use case rather than the chemistry, and Chemical Guys publish nothing about After Wash beyond "water-repelling agents".

The cheapest route is a spray wax that says it can do this
Mothers publish that California Gold Super-Hydro Spray Wax can be used on a wet car as a drying aid. That is a published second use rather than an assumption, and at $13.99 for 24 fl oz it is the cheapest way onto this page.
It is on this page for that reason and it is also on the spray wax roundup, where the rest of the category sits. If you want one bottle that does both jobs and are not fussy about which shelf it belongs on, that is the answer.
Koch-Chemie publish four different behaviors
Hydro Foam is the only product here that states what it does on each surface separately: gloss on paint, water sheeting and dripping away on glass, protection against fading and drying on plastic trim, and impregnation of fabric convertible tops.
