Why ammonia is the problem

Factory privacy glass is tinted in the glass itself and cannot be damaged by a cleaner. Aftermarket window film is different: a polyester laminate applied to the inside of the glass and held there by an adhesive layer, with a dyed or metallized layer doing the tinting.

Ammonia attacks that adhesive and the dye layer. It does not happen in one wipe — it happens over months of repeated cleaning, and the visible result is the purple discoloration and bubbling that people assume is cheap film. Sometimes it is; often it is a good film cleaned with household glass cleaner for three years.

Which products state it

Two of these state tint safety without stating ammonia content. That is almost certainly fine — a product claiming tint safety and containing ammonia would be an odd thing to sell — and it is an inference rather than a published fact, which is why Mothers leads here.

The towel matters as much as the chemical

Window film is softer than glass and scratches more easily, particularly on the inside where the film surface is exposed. A plush towel with a long pile holds grit; a low-pile or no-pile towel does not.

Autofiber publishes a 260gsm no-pile towel specifically for PPF and tint work, and a 900gsm glass towel for general glass. On film, the low-pile option is the right one — and the general rule of keeping glass towels away from every other job matters double here.

Cleaning tint without shortening its life

• Spray the towel, never the glass. Overspray onto the door card and the dashboard is the other reason to do this.
• Two towels: one damp to clean, one dry to buff immediately behind.
• Light pressure. Film does not need scrubbing, and scrubbing is what marks it.
• Roll the window down an inch to reach the top edge, which is where the film is most vulnerable and least often cleaned.
• Never use a razor blade or an abrasive pad on a tinted window, for anything, ever.

If the tint has already gone purple

Nothing on this page reverses it. The purple color is the dye layer having degraded, and the bubbling is adhesive failure — both are permanent and the only fix is removal and refilming.

What an ammonia-free routine does is prevent it happening to the next film, and prevent it happening faster to film that is still fine.
