What a coated car actually needs from a soap
Three things: that it does not strip the coating, that it lubricates well enough to keep the mitt from dragging, and that it rinses clean. That is the same list as for any car. The difference with a coating is that it cost you a day of preparation and $60 to $145 of product, so the first of those three matters more.
Every soap on this page is sold for coated cars. They split into two kinds: maintenance washes, which clean and leave nothing behind, and protection washes, which add a thin hydrophobic layer each time. Both are legitimate. Which one you want depends on how old the coating is.

The only published pH number, and why it is 8 to 9
Every soap maker in this ledger says neutral or balanced. Adam’s are the only one who print a number, and the number for Graphene Shampoo is 8 to 9 - mildly alkaline. That is deliberate: it is a foaming degreaser and shampoo in one, with citrus-based degreasers, built to cut road film off a coating so the coating can bead properly again. Adam’s state it will not harm an existing coating, sealant or wax.
Both facts are worth knowing. It is the right soap for a coated car covered in highway film, and it is more cleaning power than a car that is only dusty needs. It is also the most honest pH disclosure in the category, precisely because the number is not the comfortable one.
Maintenance soap or protection soap
P&S sell Radiance as a coating maintenance wash - it cleans and leaves the coating to do its own work. Turtle Wax, 3D and Chemical Guys each state their soap leaves something behind: a hydrophobic layer, SiO2, or water-beading protection on a car that is not coated yet.
On a fresh coating, a maintenance wash is the cleaner choice because there is nothing to top up. On a coating that is a year or two old and beading less than it did, a protection soap adds a little back on every wash. None of these makers publish how much, or for how long.
Matte and satin finishes
Gtechniq are the only maker here who state their soap is safe on matte and satin finishes as well as gloss. On a matte wrap or matte paint, any product that leaves a gloss layer behind is the wrong product, so that statement is worth more than its price per ounce suggests.
