Polishing and Paint Correction

How to Remove Scuff Marks From a Car

A scuff on a bumper is usually not your paint damaged. It is somebody else's rubber, plastic or paint sitting on top of yours, and that comes off with chemistry rather than abrasive.

We have not tested any of this. Everything below is compiled from published manufacturer specifications, and the arithmetic is printed so you can check it. This page carries affiliate links: if you buy through one we earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it does not change the order of the picks. Full disclosure.

Run a fingernail across the scuff first. If it does not catch, the mark is transfer sitting on top of your clear coat and a solvent lifts it: Mothers Speed Foaming Bug & Tar Remover is $9.99 and publishes paint, chrome, glass, plastic, acrylic, vinyl wrap and clear paint protection film among its surfaces. If your nail does catch, it is a scratch, and only polish or paint will help. Prices as of 6 October 2026.

A scraped and split front bumper corner on a yellow car

The fingernail test decides everything

Park the car, find the mark, and drag a fingernail across it lightly. If your nail glides over it, the mark is material sitting on top of your clear coat: rubber from another bumper, paint from a bollard, plastic from a shopping cart. That comes off with chemistry and a towel, often in under a minute, and no abrasive is needed.

If your nail catches, the mark is a scratch that has cut into or through the clear coat, and the honest answer changes. The scratch remover roundup covers what actually removes a clear coat scratch and which products only hide one. A scratch through to primer is a body shop job, not a bottle.

Work up, never down

The order is mildest to harshest, and most scuffs surrender before you get far. Start with a diluted all-purpose cleaner. Adam’s All Purpose Cleaner is $12.99 for 16 oz and is sold as a concentrate: full strength for grease and buildup, diluted for body panels, interior components and even leather. Adam’s publish neither a dilution ratio nor a pH, so the dilution is yours to judge, and judging conservatively costs nothing.

If the cleaner does not move it, a dedicated solvent will. Mothers Speed Foaming Bug & Tar Remover is a no-drip penetrating foam that Mothers publish for paint, chrome, glass, metal, plastic, acrylic, vinyl wrap and clear paint protection film, aimed at road grime, tar, sap and other organic matter. That published surface list is the specification that matters here, because the thing you are treating is often a bumper cover or a wrapped panel rather than painted metal.

Polish only the shadow

Sometimes the transfer lifts and leaves a faint haze or a lighter ghost where the two surfaces rubbed. That part is in your clear coat, and it is shallow. RUPES UNO Pure is $12.99 for 8.5 oz of ultrafine polish that RUPES state works on rotary, random orbital and gear-driven machines, and it is designed as a last step for optical clarity rather than for cutting.

Scuffs land on bumper corners, door edges and mirror caps, which is exactly where a full-size polisher cannot reach. Adam’s SK Pro Micro 2.0 is $229.99 and publishes a 1.5 inch backing plate, rotary plus 3mm and 12mm throws, two 12V 2.3Ah batteries and up to an hour of run time. It is a lot of money for a small job; it is the right tool if small jobs are most of what you do. The mini polisher roundup has the cheaper options, and polishing a bumper corner by hand remains perfectly viable.

Scuffed plastic trim is a different repair

A scuff across textured black bumper trim or a wheel arch molding cannot be polished out, because there is no gloss layer to refine and polishing will only burnish the texture shiny. Clean it, then put the color back. Solution Finish Black Trim Restorer with the Over the Top sealer is $37.59 as a combo, and what it is sold on is restored color without added shine, which is what factory trim looks like. Solution Finish publish no durability figure and no coverage figure. The trim restorer roundup and the trim coating roundup cover the longer-lasting end of this.

Interior scuffs

Scuff marks on door cards, kick panels and the plastic under the door sill come off with the same diluted all-purpose cleaner and a soft brush, and gloss black trim needs more care than any of it. Piano black interior trim covers the one cabin surface where the wrong towel is the thing that scratches it.

Who should buy what

  • Rubber or paint transfer on a bumper: Mothers Speed Foaming Bug & Tar Remover, $9.99, with the widest published surface list including PPF and vinyl wrap.
  • One bottle for scuffs, door shuts and interior plastics: Adam's All Purpose Cleaner, $12.99 as a concentrate, diluted down.
  • A haze or ghost left behind after the transfer lifts: RUPES UNO Pure, $12.99, ultrafine and last-step.
  • Scuffs on bumper corners and mirror caps, regularly: Adam's SK Pro Micro 2.0, $229.99, on a 1.5 inch plate.
  • Scuffed textured black trim: Solution Finish, $37.59, which restores color rather than adding gloss.
  • Skip the mini polisher for a single scuff on one car. $229.99 against a $12.99 bottle and ten minutes by hand is not a close call.
  • Skip all of this if your fingernail catches the mark. That is a scratch, and it belongs on the scratch page or at a body shop.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are figures the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis.

Questions people actually ask

+What is the difference between a scuff and a scratch?
A scuff is another material left on top of your paint; a scratch is a cut into it. The fingernail test separates them: if your nail catches, it is a scratch.
+Will a magic eraser take a scuff off car paint?
It will often take the scuff off and leave a dull patch behind, because melamine foam is a fine abrasive rather than a cleaner. Use a solvent made for automotive paint instead.
+Can I use bug and tar remover on a vinyl wrap?
Mothers publish vinyl wrap and clear paint protection film among the stated surfaces for Speed Foaming Bug & Tar Remover. Not every product in the category publishes that, so check the bottle you own rather than assuming.
+How do I get a scuff off textured plastic bumper trim?
Clean it, then restore the color with a trim product. Polishing textured trim burnishes it shiny and makes the repair more obvious than the scuff was.
+Do I need to re-wax after removing a scuff?
Yes. Both the solvent and any polishing step take wax or sealant off that area, so the panel is left unprotected until you put something back.
