How to Clean Piano Black Interior Trim
Gloss black plastic is the most scratch-prone surface in a modern cabin, and most of its damage comes from cleaning it. The fix is removing grit before anything touches the panel.

Why this surface scratches so easily
Piano black is a clear-coated gloss plastic, and it is softer than automotive clear coat on paint. It also sits exactly where hands, sleeves, keys and phone cases land, collecting fine grit all day. When you wipe it, that grit is what does the damage, and because the surface is a mirror, every scratch shows.
Which is why the cleaning rule is the same as for paint, only stricter: nothing touches the panel until the grit is off it.
The method
- Dust first, with a soft brush or filtered air. Never start with a towel.
- Spray the product onto the towel, never onto the panel, so nothing runs into switchgear.
- Use a clean, plush, edgeless towel folded to a fresh face for each panel.
- Wipe in one direction, once, with almost no pressure. Do not scrub a stubborn mark.
- Buff with a second dry towel to remove residue, again in one direction.
- Keep the towels used on gloss trim separate from everything else, and wash them separately.
Detail Factory’s Ultra-Soft Synthetic Detailing Brush Set is $17.95 and is named specifically for piano-black panels and instrument clusters, which is a rare thing for a maker to commit to in this category. A brush lifts dust out of the seams and speaker grilles around the trim, which is where it accumulates and where a towel pushes it back onto the gloss.
For the wipe itself, 3D’s GLW Series SiO2 Ceramic Interior Detailer is $19.99 for 16oz and 3D state it leaves a high-gloss, streak-free finish, repels dust and shields against UV. A light, slick product is what you want here: the less you have to work at a mark, the fewer scratches you add. The Rag Company’s suede cloths, $7.00 for five, are a useful final buff for a streak-free finish on screens and gloss panels.
If it is already swirled
Light swirl marks in gloss trim can be polished out, because it is a clear-coated surface like paint. The catch is that the panels are small, curved and surrounded by things you do not want to touch with a machine.

Deep scratches are a different matter: the clear layer on these panels is thin, and there is no repainting it. Where the damage is bad, a replacement trim piece or a wrap is the honest answer.
