Prep decides whether it sticks
The makers of the two true coatings are emphatic about cleaning first. McKee’s 37 say their coating will not properly adhere unless the tire is scrubbed with their Tire & Rubber Rejuvenator until the foam comes up white, then left to dry completely; after coating, it needs an hour before water. Adam’s say some tires need five rounds of cleaning and some two, and to dry the tread and the bead before applying Tire Armor. The tire cleaner roundup covers the first step.
Satin or gloss
Gyeon’s Q² Tire leaves a natural satin finish. Adam’s Tire Armor gives a satin finish with one coat and more gloss with another after about 15 minutes. Turtle Wax and 3D both sell high gloss, and 3D also make a matte version of their ceramic tire product.
