What claying actually does
Washing removes what is sitting on the paint. Claying removes what is embedded in it: industrial fallout, rail dust, overspray, tree sap residue and brake dust that has bonded into the clear coat. The test is tactile. Wash the car, dry it, put your hand in a thin plastic bag and run it lightly over a horizontal panel. If it feels like fine sandpaper, the car needs claying. If it feels like glass, it does not.
That test is the whole diagnostic, and it is why claying is not a scheduled maintenance item. Most cars need it once or twice a year, and a garaged weekend car might need it every other year. Claying paint that is already smooth removes nothing and adds marring risk.
Grade is the specification, and one maker publishes it
Clay comes in grades, from fine through medium to heavy, and the grade determines how much it shears off and how much marring it leaves behind. A heavy-grade clay on soft paint will leave fine marring that needs polishing out, which turns a decontamination job into a correction job.
Koch-Chemie is the only maker in this group that tells you: blue is mild cleaning clay, red is the stronger grade. Everybody else sells clay without stating what grade it is. That disclosure alone is why the Koch-Chemie bar leads this page at more than double the price of the alternatives.

Bar
The traditional medium. It conforms to any shape, it is precise around badges and edges, and it is finished the instant you drop it. A dropped bar has picked up whatever was on the floor and using it again is how people put deep scratches into their own paint. At $16 that is an annoyance; the discipline of never putting it down is the real cost.
Mitt and towel
Synthetic rubber media on a mitt or towel backing. Far faster over a large panel, rinsable, and they survive the floor. The trade is precision: a mitt does not get into the same tight spaces a bar does, and it is less forgiving on soft paint if you press.
Block

What comes after
Claying strips whatever protection was on the car — that is not a side effect, it is what decontamination means. Which is why claying and protecting are the same job: clay, then apply a wax, sealant or coating the same day. A decontaminated, unprotected car is the least protected it has been since it left the factory.
And clay after chemical decontamination, never before. An iron remover dissolves the ferrous particles chemically so the clay has less to shear off, which means less marring and a bar that lasts longer.
