Corded vs Cordless Detailing Tools

Cordless removes the most annoying thing about every power tool and costs a premium nobody quantifies, because no maker in this category publishes a runtime.

By Sawyer V. · Last verified 2026-09-08

We have not tested any of this. Everything below is compiled from published manufacturer specifications, and the arithmetic is printed so you can check it. This page carries affiliate links: if you buy through one we earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it does not change the order of the picks. Full disclosure.

Corded for polishing, cordless for blowers and small vacuums. A polisher runs at high draw continuously, which is the hardest thing you can ask of a battery, and no maker here publishes a runtime. A blower runs in short bursts, where cordless is genuinely better.

A cordless polisher and a corded machine side by side on a bench

Duty cycle is the whole argument

A drill draws heavily for a second at a time. A polisher draws heavily for forty minutes at a time, and that difference is why battery tools arrived late in this category. Continuous high draw drains a pack fast and heats it, and heat is what shortens battery life.

Which produces a clean rule: the more continuous the task, the stronger the case for a cord. Polishing is the most continuous thing in detailing. Blowing water out of trim gaps is the least.

ToolDuty cycleCordless verdict
PolisherContinuous, 30-60 min per sessionCorded, unless you work without power
VacuumContinuous but interruptibleCordless is fine for interiors; corded for deep cleaning
BlowerShort burstsCordless, clearly
Pressure washerContinuous and high drawCorded, universally
Duty cycle characteristics follow from how each tool is used. No detailing tool documented on this site publishes a battery runtime.

The premium, in the one direct comparison available

Adam’s sells a corded SK Pro 15mm at $299.99 and a cordless 15mm at $569.99. Same published throw. The corded machine publishes 1,000 watts, 110 volts, 9 amps, a 5.5 lb weight and a 25 foot detachable cord. The cordless machine publishes the throw and nothing else — no voltage, no capacity, no runtime, no weight.

That is $270 for the absence of a cord and the absence of any way to evaluate the battery. It is the clearest example on this site of a price premium attached to a specification gap, and it is why the cordless polisher roundup recommends against the category for most readers.

Where cordless genuinely wins

  • Mobile detailing, where you are working on somebody else's driveway with no guaranteed outlet.
  • Blowers, which run in bursts and where a cord is pure nuisance. Adam's Mini Air Cannon is $99.99 and this is its best use.
  • Interior vacuuming, where the sessions are short and reaching a footwell with a cord is awkward.
  • Spot work: one panel, one scratch, where setting up a cord is most of the job.
  • Anywhere an extension lead across a wet floor is a safety issue rather than an inconvenience.

The three figures nobody publishes

Battery voltage, which sets the ceiling on how much power the motor can draw. Amp-hour capacity, which determines how long that lasts. And runtime under load, which is the number that actually answers the question.

Across every cordless product documented on this site, not one publishes any of them. That is a remarkable gap in a category where the battery is the entire product difference, and it is why this comparison ends with a recommendation rather than a ranking.

The practical answer

Buy corded for anything that runs continuously and spend the difference on consumables. A 25 foot detachable cord reaches around a car from one outlet, and a $30 extension lead covers the rest.

Buy cordless for blowers and small vacuums, where the duty cycle suits a battery and the convenience is genuine. And revisit cordless polishers when somebody in this category starts publishing a runtime figure — at which point the comparison becomes possible rather than speculative.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are figures the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis.

Our pickThe most power on a 15mm throw, on a detachable cord

Adam's SK Pro 15mm Swirl Killer

Adam's Polishes

6.1/10

$299.99 for 15mm at 1,000W and 9 amps, with a progressive trigger to 5,000 OPM, a 5 inch plate convertible to 6, 5.5 lb without the cord and a 25 foot detachable cord. The progressive trigger is the feature: speed by finger pressure rather than by dial.

What it does well

  • Progressive trigger up to 5,000 OPM, so speed is controlled by hand rather than by stopping to turn a dial
  • 1,000W and 9 amps published, the most power on a 15mm throw here
  • 25 foot detachable cord published, and detachable matters for storage
  • 5.5 lb without cord published

Who it is not for

  • $299.99 is $50 more than the G15 for a similar throw and similar power
  • No warranty term published
  • A progressive trigger takes practice; a dial is more repeatable between sessions

2Correcting a car that is not near an outlet

Adam's Cordless 15mm Swirl Killer

Adam's Polishes

3.6/10

Skip this one. Paying $270 for the absence of a cord makes sense in a driveway with no outlet and nowhere else. If you polish in a garage, buy the corded machine and a longer extension lead.

$569.99 for a 15mm cordless dual action machine. Cordless removes the single most annoying thing about machine polishing, and it costs $270 more than the corded SK Pro with the same throw. Adam's publishes no battery capacity, runtime or weight for it.

What it does well

  • Same throw as the corded SK Pro, so technique transfers directly
  • Kit versions bundle pads and polishes

Who it is not for

  • No battery voltage, capacity or runtime published, which on a cordless tool is the specification
  • $569.99 against $299.99 for the corded machine with the same throw
  • No weight published, and a battery is weight in your hand

Adam's Mini Air Cannon Cordless Blower & Vacuum

Adam's Polishes

4.2/10

4The only vacuum here with a published suction figure

Adam's Vac N Blo 500W Hand Vac/Blower

Adam's Polishes

4.4/10

$184.99 for a 500 watt unit weighing 3 lb with a published seal suction measurement of 60 inches of water lift. Water lift is the specification that actually describes suction, and this is the only vacuum in the ledger that publishes one.

What it does well

  • 60 inches of water lift published, the only real suction figure in this ledger
  • 500 watts and 3 lb both published
  • Vacuum and blower in one, so it dries door shuts as well as clearing carpet

Who it is not for

  • $184.99 is $25 more than the cyclonic unit
  • 3 lb held at arm's length gets heavy on a long interior
  • Ships direct from the manufacturer, so returns are less simple

Questions people actually ask

+Is a cordless polisher powerful enough?
The published throw is the same as the corded equivalent, so the mechanics are unchanged. Without a published runtime under load, how long that power lasts is unknown.
+How long do cordless detailing tool batteries last?
No detailing tool documented on this site publishes a runtime, a voltage or a capacity.
+Is cordless worth the extra money?
For blowers and small vacuums, yes. For a polisher it is $270 over the corded equivalent in the one direct comparison available.
+Can I use a generic power tool battery polisher?
General tool brands sell bare-tool polishers on their own platforms, which is a genuinely different value proposition if you already own the batteries.
