The Best Wet Sanding Kit for Cars in 2026

Sanding is for the defects a compound cannot remove, as KxK put it: deep scratches and orange peel. Adam's describe their kit as the step that paves the way for polishing, not a replacement for it.

Buy Adam’s Scratch Remover Sanding Kit at $39.99: a 3 inch hand-held puck, an interface pad, and three discs each of 1000, 2000 and 3000 grit. KxK’s SK-1 kit is cheaper at $24.99 with four blocks and a 1500 grit step, on smaller 2 inch discs.

When sanding is the answer

KxK sell their 3000 grit discs for deeper defects that compounding cannot remove, and Adam’s say their kit helps remove deep scratches and orange peel. That is the whole case for sanding: when a scratch is too deep for a cutting compound, you level the clear around it first. The scratch remover roundup has the fingernail test for telling which kind of scratch you have.

Grit is a sequence

Both kits step through three grits, coarse to fine, so each grit removes the marks the one before it left. Adam’s run 1000, 2000 and 3000; KxK run 1500, 2000 and 3000. Both sell refills, which matters because the kits carry only two or three discs of each grit.

Puck or block

Adam’s back their 3 inch discs with a hand-held PU puck and an interface pad. KxK use R.I.D. STIX blocks, two soft and two hard, and their thin foam-backed discs wrap round them. Chemical Guys’ Hyper Flex block is pitched at headlights and paint, and the listing says nothing about what paper goes with it.

Polish afterward

Sanding leaves its own marks, which is why Adam’s describe their kit as paving the way for polishing. How to polish a car covers what comes after the 3000 grit.

What to buy

  • A complete first kit: Adam's Scratch Remover Sanding Kit, $39.99.
  • The cheapest complete kit, with a 1500 grit step: KxK SK-1, $24.99.
  • Restocking Adam's 3 inch discs: the refill packs, $12.99 a grit.
  • Restocking KxK's finishing grit: P-3000 discs, $10.99 for ten.

Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are figures the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis.

4Scratches a compound genuinely cannot reach

Adam's Scratch Remover Sanding Kit

Adam's Polishes

4.8/10

Skip this one. If you cannot measure your clear coat thickness, sanding it is a gamble with a repaint as the downside. Most scratches that catch a fingernail are a body shop's job, not a Saturday's.

$39.99 for three grits of sandpaper to work a deep scratch down progressively before compounding it out. This is the correct tool for the job and it is also the fastest way to go through a clear coat if you misjudge the depth.

What it does well

  • Three grits included, so the progression is built into the kit
  • Addresses the defects a compound alone will never remove
  • Cheaper than one panel of paintwork by two orders of magnitude

Who it is not for

  • Sanding clear coat is genuinely risky without a paint depth gauge, which is not included
  • Three discs of each grit; refills are sold separately
  • No stated safe removal limit
