The decision is about preparation, not protection
Every comparison of these three leads with durability, and durability is the least useful axis for deciding. A coating claiming three years and a wax claiming four months look like a nine-to-one difference until you account for the fact that the coating requires a decontaminated, corrected, panel-wiped car and the wax requires a washed one.
That preparation is not a formality. It is most of a weekend, it needs a machine polisher if the paint has defects, and doing it badly produces a coating that fails early and looks worse than the wax would have. The honest question is not which product lasts longest. It is which product you will apply correctly.
If you have a free weekend and a garage
Coat it. The payoff is real: washing gets faster for years, chemical resistance goes up sharply, and the car stays cleaner between washes. The coating roundup is the page to read, and what paint correction is covers the step before it.
If you have two hours on a Sunday
Seal it. A spray sealant on a clean car takes twenty minutes and lasts a season, and reapplying quarterly is a habit rather than a project. The sealant roundup covers the options.
If the way the paint looks is the point
Wax it. Nothing in the silica family reproduces what a carnauba does on dark paint, and if you enjoy the process, four applications a year is not a burden. The wax roundup ranks them on what is published, which in this category is very little.
What none of them do
None of these products prevents physical damage. A stone chip goes through all three.
