A brush is a compromise on paint
A wash mitt’s deep pile carries grit up and away from the paint, and you rinse it in a bucket after every panel. A brush has bristles instead of pile and a hard block behind them, and the block is the part that scratches if it touches the car. That is why the brushes here publish soft, flagged tips and bumpers: their makers know where the risk is.
On a car you can reach, a wash mitt is the better tool. A brush earns its place where you cannot reach: the roof of a van, the upper panels of a lifted truck, an RV.

Flagged tips and bumpers are the published safety features
Flagged bristles are split at the tip, which makes the contact face softer. Hi-Tech publish 2.5-inch flagged-tip nylon, resistant to acids and detergents, set in a foam block with a rubber bumper around the whole body; General Car Care publish a rubber gasket bumper on their standard brush. Nobody publishes a bristle density.
Flow-through handles
Hi-Tech’s block takes a flow-through handle, sold separately, which runs hose water through the brush as you wash. They say the constant flushing helps prevent scratching and water spots, which matters most on a large vehicle that takes a long time to wash.
Contours, bumpers and trim
Two brushes here are built for shapes a flat block misses. General Car Care’s PRO has five faces, with 2.25-inch bristles on top and 1.25-inch on the angled sides, for wheel wells, bumpers and body lines. Hi-Tech’s Noghair has a curved head covering nearly 180 degrees, 8 by 3.5 inches with 3-inch bristles.
