Why a headliner is not a seat
Most headliners are a thin fabric over a foam layer, glued to a molded backing board. Soak one and the moisture reaches the adhesive, which can let go days later and leave the fabric hanging. That is a trim-shop repair, and it is why every step below keeps the liquid on the tool.
It is also the one surface in the car you clean upside down, so anything sprayed on runs toward you and pools at the edges. Foam helps, because it stays where you put it.

The method
- 1Vacuum lightly. A soft brush attachment and almost no pressure. You are lifting dust, not grinding it in.
- 2Test a hidden spot. Near the rear edge or behind a visor clip, to check the fabric does not change color.
- 3Put the cleaner on the tool. Chemical Guys’ method is to apply the foam and agitate with a brush; on a headliner, the foam goes on the brush.
- 4One hand-sized section at a time. Light strokes in one direction, so the nap dries even.
- 5Blot. Press a dry, low-pile towel into the section to lift the dirt and the moisture. Rubbing pushes both deeper.
- 6Let it dry with the doors open. No heat gun and no hair dryer; heat is the other thing the adhesive does not like.
When a stain will not come out
If two careful passes have not shifted a mark, stop. The third pass is the one that soaks through to the adhesive, and a faint stain is a better outcome than a sagging roof.
