Ceramic Coatings and Protection
PPF vs Ceramic Coating
They get sold as alternatives and they are not. One is a physical layer thick enough to take an impact; the other is a chemical layer thousandths as thick that changes how the surface behaves. Only one of them stops a stone.

The question is which damage you are actually getting
Go and look at the front of your car. If the leading edge of the hood, the mirror backs and the lower third of the bumper are speckled with chips, you have an impact problem, and no coating on this website will touch it. A coating is measured in microns. A stone at seventy miles an hour does not notice microns.
If instead the paint is chip-free and your complaints are that the car gets dirty fast, water dries into spots, bird droppings leave marks and washing takes too long, that is a surface energy problem, and that is exactly what a coating is for. Spending four figures on film to solve it would work, in the sense that film is also easy to clean, and it would be an absurd way to buy the result.
Self-healing is the claim with no coating equivalent
XPEL publish that their film self-heals minor scratches, swirl marks and light abrasions through elastomeric polymer technology. Nothing in the coating category claims that, and the handful of coatings that advertise scratch resistance are talking about resisting marring, not recovering from it. If you have read whether a ceramic coating prevents scratches, the short answer there is the same as the short answer here.
The other end of that trade is permanence. A coating can be polished off; removing a ceramic coating covers how. Film is removed by a shop, and 8 mil of urethane across a hood is not a thing you peel off on a Sunday.
The answer most owners land on is both
Film on the impact zone, coating on everything else, is a coherent plan rather than a salesman’s upsell, and it is what the existence of film-specific coatings tells you the market is doing. A paint coating is formulated for a rigid surface. Film stretches, moves and heals, and a coating that cracked as the film flexed would be a bad trade.
| Coating over film | Size | Price | Published durability | Films named |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nasiol PPF Guard | 50ml | $89.30 | Up to 18 months | Glossy, matte and satin; states it maintains the self-healing properties |
| Gtechniq HALO V2 | 30ml / 50ml | $74.95 / $99.95 | Not published | PPF and vinyl in gloss, matte, satin and self-healing |
Nasiol is the one that publishes the method as well as the figure: two layers sixty minutes apart, around 73F and 50 percent humidity, no more than a square meter at a time, and no shampoo for 48 hours. Gtechniq name more film finishes but publish no durability figure at all, which on a $99.95 bottle is a real gap. The film coating roundup ranks these alongside a third option.
Who should buy which
- Your bumper and hood are already chipped, or the car is new and you intend to keep it: film. Nothing chemical substitutes for 8 mil of urethane.
- Your paint is sound and the complaint is washing, water spots and gloss: a coating. CarPro CQUARTZ UK 3.0 at $59.99 publishes 70% SiO2, 2 to 5 years and a 10ml-per-coat consumption figure.
- A leased car you hand back in three years: a coating, and put the film money toward the lease.
- A car that already has film: a film-specific coating. Nasiol PPF Guard at $89.30 publishes up to 18 months and states it keeps the self-healing working.
- Matte or satin wrap: Gtechniq HALO V2, $74.95, which names those finishes, accepting it publishes no durability figure.
- Skip film if the car lives in a garage and does ten thousand highway-free miles a year. You are buying impact protection against impacts you are not taking.
- Skip a coating as chip protection. It is not one, and no maker here claims it is.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are figures the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis.
Our pickThe only coating here that publishes its SiO2 percentage
CarPro CQUARTZ UK 3.0
CarPro
CarPro publishes 70% SiO2 at 99.9% purity, a 2 to 5 year durability range, a 10ml-per-coat consumption figure and a 40F to 90F application window. That is four hard numbers on one page, and it is four more than most of this category manages. Buy it because it is checkable, not because 70% is magic.

What it does well
- 70% SiO2 at 99.9% purity, published by CarPro on the product page
- Application window published as 40F to 90F, which is the figure that decides whether your garage works in November
- 10ml per coat published, so a 30ml bottle is roughly three coats and the arithmetic is yours to do
- Kit includes suede applicators, a block and a leveling towel rather than just the bottle
Who it is not for
- The durability claim is a three-year-wide range, which is a wide range to plan around
- No cure-time figure published beyond the 2-5 minute buffing window
- Leveling is unforgiving compared with a spray coating; this is not the coating to learn on
