A carpet extractor pulls the dirty solution back out of the fabric. Without one you have to keep the fabric from getting soaked in the first place, which is a technique rather than a machine.

What the machine actually does
An extractor does two jobs: it injects solution into the fabric and then vacuums the dirty liquid back out. The second half is the valuable one. Without it, whatever you spray into a seat stays in the seat, carrying the dirt down into the foam where it dries, wicks back up and leaves a ring.
So the no-extractor method is built around a single rule: never put more moisture in than your towels can take out. Everything below follows from that.
Foam is the whole trick
Foam sits on the fibers rather than running through them. Chemical Guys Foaming Citrus Fabric Clean is $11.99 as a 16oz concentrate, sold in a foaming format designed to be agitated with a brush, which is exactly the delivery this method needs.
For spots rather than whole seats, a pre-treatment does the heavy work. P&S Terminator is $12.95 a pint, a blend of dry and wet cleaning agents written as a pre-treatment for carpet and upholstery before shampooing. Chemical Guys Lightning Fast Stain Extractor is $11.99 for 16oz for grease, dirt and grime, although their listing publishes no directions at all, so treat dwell time conservatively and test first.
The method
- Vacuum thoroughly first, including the seams and under the seat rails. Wet dirt is far harder to remove than dry dirt.
- Test any product on a hidden area, especially on older or light-colored fabric.
- Pre-treat stains and let them dwell a minute or two; do not let anything dry on the fabric.
- Work one seat panel at a time. Apply foam, agitate, then immediately absorb with a folded towel.
- Press and lift with the towel rather than scrubbing with it. Pressing pulls solution out; scrubbing pushes it in.
- Repeat on the same panel rather than moving on wet. Two light passes beat one soaking.
- Leave the doors open, or run the fan, until the foam underneath is dry to the touch.
Agitation is what an extractor wand provides and what your arm has to replace.
